Terms for letter: I

I

Seeing the letter "I" can be a symbol for the Self if you are currently not acknowledging or owning an issue. You may feel victimized and the dream is asking you to take responsibility for the situation. See also Eye. It can relate to a message to turn inward, with ideas like inspiration, insight, intuition. Its message can be how success is a path of self completion - and the seed is always within you.

Ice

Since water is often associated with feelings, ice can represent feelings in a frozen or inanimate condition. You may be cut off from your feelings, or you are keeping an idea 'on ice' rather than processing and releasing it. Seeing something frozen, or encased in ice and lifeless, can signify your awareness that some aspect of you is inanimate, possibly because of fear: ‘frozen with fear.’ Dreaming of walking on ice can show the precarious result of trying to skim over emotions. You can 'fall in' and be consumed by them - as in the case of holding in feelings only to explode at the least little incident. See also Refrigerator.

Ice Cream

Desserts in dreams hold the same idea as Food, or how you are exploring nourishment and fulfillment from a more broad perspective. Associated with the idea of getting your 'just desserts' these types of foods are connected to your idea of success and rewards in life. Since it is made of cream, it can have sexual meanings of release, however its coldness can embody how you are exploring sexual feelings that are 'on ice.' The cream aspect can also tie it to issues of maternal influences.

Identity

The most confusing aspect of dream interpretation is the idea that every character, symbol and even the landscape and lighting portray aspects of you. In waking life, you have the sense of being isolated or separate from everything around you, but at microscopic levels, all of life can be observed to be interdependent and behaving as one giant organism.

When Einstein penetrated the secrets of the molecular world, he remarked: “Nature does not distinguish between mass and energy but observes them to be one and the same.” He also revealed how our idea of space and time being distinct was incorrect: they are interwoven. His work transformed our understanding of the natural world, revealing our tendency to compartmentalize every aspect, as if each might exist independently. We now realize that there are no isolated building blocks, only the intricate relationship of how each part is an observable variation of a larger whole. It is we, who “must become open” if we are to understand nature’s more holistic interconnectivity. Dreams operate from a more organic awareness and present the first clues that our normal perceptive orientation may not be accurate.

We are brought together propitiously to learn from each other. In dreams, we see how characters portray the emerging and changing sides of ourselves. Perhaps dreams can teach us how we can become more observant and learn from our interactions with others. See Dreams as a model for approaching relationships under Dream Processing.

Illness

When you dream of characters that are ill or handicapped, you may be exploring an undernourished part of yourself that requires healing. The thing about dreams is that since everyone is portraying you in some way - the message from this type of dream is how you are incapacitated or not up to par in some respect. See Healing.

Imitate

If you dream of a character imitating you, it can be the Trickster archetype active, or that part of the self that challenges how absolutes limit us in our growth. In all of our serious attempts to be certain, we can get lost in our inconsistencies and there is a part of us that would help us break through to truth. This comical message is portraying how illogical ideas cannot be supported. If you are imitating someone else in a dream, you can be adopting or exploring traits you associate with them. The whole idea of imitation presents the consideration that something is not what it appears to be.

Incense

Burning incense in a dream can symbolize spiritual longing. If you are covering up a bad smell with incense, you may feel that something is wrong in your environment and rather than solve it, you would rather cover it up. Incense can also be a cryptic way of exploring feeling 'incensed' or angry when you are not allowing anger to be expressed.

Incubator

You can dream of an incubator when there is something going on inside that is gestating in preparation for rebirth. Even the baby in the incubator represents the rebirth or emergence of a new side of you. Observing an egg in an incubator can also suggest an awakening. If it is a reptilian egg, the area undergoing transformation can be related to sex or a profound type of transformation. The chicken egg in an incubator can be suggesting how you are protecting your fear. In most cases the egg is a symbol of new awakenings and rebirth.

Indian

Like an aborigine, dreaming of an indian (because of what we were taught in school) can symbolize the uncivilized or non conforming part of us that would have a deeper connection to ourselves and life. There is something unquestionably creative and spiritual in this type of inner guide. When an indian appears in your dream you might explore your inspiration or the value you place on experience. If you are feeling disconnected from a sense of inner peace and fulfillment, this character is the first sign that an awakening is occurring within you.

Indigestion

Indigestion in a dream can represent how you are unable to process something that 'does not agree with you.' The message might mean that you are forcing some situation when it really has nothing to do with your real desires.

Infection

The idea of infection can be both good and bad. We can be infected by laughter or become infected with something that makes us sick. The idea is that something that is in your environment is having an influence on you through osmosis. What type of friends are you surrounding yourself with and is it a healthy type of interaction? The infection had a cause and you are getting a message to explore where it came from. Only then can you solve the lack of wellness portrayed by this dream. See also Bacteria and also, Healing.

Inflammation

If you notice some part of your body becoming red or inflamed in a dream, you may have a 'sore spot' in relation to what the body part represents. In real life, inflammation is how the immune system rejects and processes toxins and dreaming of inflammation can have a similar meaning in helping you to achieve wellness. On the foot, you may be irritated with the false starts in your sense of direction. On the legs, you may be insecure about 'carrying your own weight.' If your arms are showing swelling in a dream, you may be feeling irritation about carrying the burdens of others. On your hands, you may be making choices that aren't appropriate for you. If your face becomes disfigured because of swelling - you may be exploring the idea that you are becoming someone you are not. The face is unrecognizable because it isn't healthy for you and isn't your 'real face.' Explore the part of the body involved for more information about what is 'festering' or in need of attention.

Injection

Dreaming of getting an injection can show the difficulty you are having in allowing something into consciousness. This type of dream seems to suggest that healing and/or wellness cannot occur unless you become more open to: love, sex, feelings, enthusiasm, or optimism. See also Syringe, Vaccine, Drugs and also, Healing.

Insects

The vast majority of life forms are insects. Their longevity on this planet suggests that they will outlive us, but we have little respect for their strength as a species. Although we do not consider insects to be intelligent - they are more successful as a species than we are. In dreams they can represent social interaction and the strong pull of peer pressure.

Insects operate in social structures that are similar to ours, and can suggest ideas about being a team player, or getting caught up in what we believe is required of us. Because they are viewed as pests, they can symbolize social issues that are 'bugging' us.

As a symbol of unconscious processes, they appear ‘driven’ like soldiers, without any sense of consciousness about what they are doing. When ants appear, they are often associated with food and therefore, can suggest not feeling like you are getting what you deserve. Spiders are not insects, but appear as such, hiding in webs and threatening to bite, representing insecurity or feeling pursued or trapped in your growth by being afraid. Spiders can also represent the web of how various influences are tied together. Larvae and flying insects can portray metamorphosis and the ability to transform. Worms can actually be a positive symbol about a type of life that stirs beneath the surface or what you fail to recognize. They regenerate the soil and can symbolize transforming difficulty into something positive. Moths appear to be compulsively drawn to any type of light and can represent obsessively being drawn toward what you feel you need. At the same time, the moth can symbolize spiritual pursuits or a desire to bring something to light. Just as insects build their hives, webs and underground tunnels, dreaming of insects will often suggest how whatever is bugging you is self-created. Often dreaming of bees can be a play on words and the way the clever psyche is exploring the idea of being, or the sense of 'just do it....just be.' A honeybee can combine the idea of sweetness and pollination as a message about lightness of being.

Inside

The difference between being inside and outside in a dream emphasizes whether we are exploring private issues (inside) or whether the issue relates to making a debut or changing how we interact with others (outside.) Examining a symbol that is observed to be ‘inside’ of something else can represent what is being protected or at the core of the issue. See Placement and Perspective.

Insulation

Dreaming of insulation signifies protective tendencies. It is something used in erecting walls that controls temperature. Therefore insulation can symbolize how one 'insulates' themselves from feelings.

Insurance

Negotiating an insurance policy in a dream brings forward issues related to security. If you have an accident and find out your insurance doesn't cover it, you may feel that you are setting goals that are unrealistic. The insurance policy can be understood in terms of what you are investing symbolically to ensure your success. Generally this type of dream is teaching you to be honest in understanding your capabilities. If the dream is resolved by getting insurance money, the message can suggest that you have more reserves (in terms of capabilities/self-esteem) than you thought possible. Insurance related to the home can embody the idea that life is a learning experience that requires continual transformation. Insurance related to the car revolves around the issue of drive and motivation. Insurance related to health can have a more literal message about the need to care for your body.

Intercourse

Since dreams allow for the free exploration of feelings, it is common to dream of sharing affection, sex or intimacy with people other than your mate. As you ‘role play’ by experiencing the different aspects of yourself, this can be portrayed by various characters, where you sometimes behave in a masculine way (mounting/dominating) another masculine character (your aggressive and assertive nature.) You are merely exploring your desire to be more aggressive.

You may dream of being unusually sensitive or affectionate with another woman, or in a feminine way, as a way of ‘embracing’ or exploring the idea of increased sensitivity within you, regardless of your sex. The side of you this person represents and how you approach them in the dream, will feel ‘clandestine,’ only in proportion to how you are currently not ‘embracing’ or integrating this side of yourself in waking life. See Anima/Animus and Archetypes and Universal Characters.

Interpretation of Dreams

Dreams present information differently than ordinary experience in that all symbols are representing aspects of you. Dreams take subjective experience and utilize symbols to allow you to explore the possibility for change in an objective format. Ideas consciousness might shut down by day are freely explored in the dreamscape. See Dream Processing for more information on dream interpretation.

Intersection

Approaching an intersection in the road can symbolize changing paths or making choices about your life direction. Two roads are crossing and you may have to decide between two possible paths. If a car unexpectedly pulls out in an intersection, you may have conflicting desires and feel like you need to stop while you decide what to do.

Intruder

Having a dream of an intruder portrays an unintegrated part of you that is unacknowledged, yet seeks access into your 'house.' Since the house represents your inner architecture, dreaming of an intruder can symbolize the need to accept and find compassion for a part of you that may be in hiding. These types of dreams are common when early family dynamics may have labeled you a blacksheep in some way. While you grow to become an empowered and caring human being, some part of you may still need to be resurrected and 'allowed in.' This is described more in detail under Shadow.

Inventor

To dream of someone inventing something reveals your ability to create something new of your life, even if you feel stuck. Whatever symbolism is being invented can shed light on what this area will be. Often dreaming of an invention is representative of the first level of incorporating change. Inventing shows the inspiration that is coming forward to guide you. Look at what is being invented objectively, and break it down to discover the sense of direction that is coming to you.

Island

The island is the foundation you stand upon that remains subject to the unpredictable behavior of the seas, (or emotions.) It can also symbolize how your need to protect your feelings has left you feeling isolated and alone.
