Uranus Signs

Statue of scientist holding an astrolabe

The mythology behind this unusual planet and Archetype comes from the mythology of Ouranos and how the deity was described as Aithír or Ether: "spinning, filling all the space, and by spinning it draws the particles of Earth into its center and unites with them, creating Form." This is a magnetic Archetype that will infuse a sense of iconoclastic tendencies in the sign and house in which it is placed.

Uranus is often referred to as "Freedom from the Known" and it does seem to show the area of life where we tend to do things differently. In understanding the birth chart, the position of Uranus will reveal some of our most unique qualities. In the process of individuation, Uranus by sign and house will need to find expression so that the individual can express their authenticity.

When Uranus was observed during the Voyager exploration in 1986, pictures were captured that showed how it is tipped on its side, spinning differently from other planets. It is the coldest planet and there is a sense of aloofness that is associated with the Archetype's mythology. It's magnetic field is unlike any other planet as well.

The magnetic tail of Uranus twists in a helix that stretches 6 million miles and is not aligned to its poles. Uranus in myths is associated with the sky and it is the ruler of Aquarius. All of the images we associate with Uranus have given us an understanding of where in our life we tend to 'spin sideways' or go against the grain.

Uranus in Aries and the First House

Next to having an Aquarius Sun sign, having Uranus in Aries or the First House is going to make the native appear iconoclastic and perhaps dressed as a rebel. The native will want the freedom to express themselves and the double dose of the impulsiveness that Mars ruled Aries brings to Uranus can make this individual known for just being a bit off center.

Aries is a Fiery placement for the rebellious planet so going with the flow will be the exact opposite of what the native wants to do. When not owning this aspect, they can attract other people who play this part for them and they will be attracted to friends and mates who are non committal and quite eclectic. Uranus in Aries is fast, opinionated and so many steps ahead of the conversation that by the time others understand their point, they may have moved on.

This is a highly individualistic placement for Uranus and depending on the other aspects, can describe the ultimate rebel with the cause of just wanting to be different.

Uranus in Taurus or the Second House

When you blend the tenaciousness of Taurus with the freedom loving energy of Uranus the idea of stubborn originality. Taurus is a Fixed sign which is opposite from everything Uranus is striving to achieve so the individual may believe they are flexible even when they are being dogmatic.

The Second house is associated with self esteem and resources. On one hand, the individual with Uranus in the Second House may feel that their originality and bizarre approach is what makes them loveable. While others look for signals of acceptance, Uranus in the Second House observes the shock factor as approval. But they may also form a relationship with the pursuit of resources that changes so much that they are unable to derive a sense of security.

Uranus will make the pursuit of financial security tied to the idea of freedom or independence. The native may find an unusual way of making money or use technology in their work.

Uranus in Gemini or the Third House

Hermes is the inspiration behind the sign Gemini and we hear how he played the lyre immediately after being born and promptly went outside to steal Apollo's cattle. Barely 10 hours old, he cleverly put branches on the cow's hooves and made them all walk backwards to hide their tracks. This is the type of quick thinking and innovative genius that Uranus can bring to the already Mercurial Gemini.

The Third House is associated with the mind and communication so these individuals can have flashes of genius that can be applied in innovative ways. As the house associated with siblings, the native may have brothers and sisters who are unpredictable and rebellious.

There will be nothing mundane about the intellect and the individual will thrive on ingenious wit and quick insight. This is a playful placement for Uranus and Airy Gemini knows exactly how to master the planet's energy.

Uranus in Virgo and the Sixth House

Uranus in the Sixth House is best suited to working for oneself, remotely or even juggling several jobs to keep the pace of life interesting. This placement can make the native drawn to unusual diets and healing modalities and may even lead to work in alternative medicine.

While Virgo suggests a desire for stasis and order, it is also ruled by Mercury and like Gemini, Uranus will express itself best in the area of the mind. Freedom in this placement comes from taking the mundane and shaping it with a different slant to innovate old methods. While not as rebellious as Uranus in other signs, the individual will enjoy new trends in exercise and being the first to adopt them.

The career can take on an unusual dimension and can relate to the sciences or technology. Capricorn brings a stable foundation to the otherwise unpredictable Uranus, so the native may vacillate between periods of building, but with unexpected changes that lead them in an entirely new direction.
